The beautiful Hohenau Alm is also known as the “Little Tibet of Zillertal”, where you will find “Sherpas”, prayer wheels and prayer flags. Apart from that, everything is done the traditional Tirolean way. Surrounded by alpine meadows where 30 head of cattle including Angus heifers graze, the mountain hut features two small dining lounges (stuben). A few goats, three pigs and a number of chicken also spend their summers at the Hohenau Alm. Visitors to the mountain hut terrace enjoy magnificent views of the Zillertal Alps and sparkling waters of the Zillergrund Reservoir, which reflect the deep blue sky on sunny days.
From Gasthof Bärenbad in Zillergrund, one of Zillertal’s tributary valleys, this 2.5-hour walk is dotted with pleasant benches and takes you past the reservoir and pretty waterfalls to the Hohenau Alm.
