Around the abbey site of Saint Peter a settlement core developed during the Middle Ages. Over time, a parish church was also built for its inhabitants, just outside the abbey's area. The rivers Leie and Schelde formed the boundaries of this Saint Peter village in the west and the east. In the north, the boundary was formed by the Ketelvest, a ditch dug around 1100.
The parish church of the Saint Peter village was dedicated to Our Lady, hence the church's current name.
