Although the trees in Kouterplein appear quite natural, it is a testament to the skills of the Ghent Green Department to have them survive here. The underground parking is located just beneath the surface, which means the trees do not have a deep soil to root in. Therefore, a tree species with a shallow root system was chosen, and the roots were anchored with chains just below the surface, so they will not topple during the first storm.
