Under the Dutch rule, an old dream of Ghent became possible again: a direct connection to the sea. However, the Sassevaart had silted up, and the adjoining polders faced flooding problems: a wider and deeper canal was thus needed. For the first 21 kilometers of the new Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, the old route of the Sassevaart was maintained to Sas Van Gent. In Ghent itself, work immediately began on the construction of the first connecting harbor docks: the Handelsdok and the Achterdok (1829).
