The Maria Hendrikaplein is lined with 60 espalier plane trees that were planted here in the early 1920s. Their crowns are cut in a special way, so that together they form a canopy. Since 1995, these trees have been protected and it is forbidden to feed them...
In the middle of the square you will find a beautiful statue with a fountain. This is a work by Paul Van Gysegem. The man and woman represent the Scheldt and the Lys. Both rivers are once again symbolized by the two water sources that meet in the middle where the statue stands. The perpendicular supports of the sculpture suggest a passage, a gate. This is a reference to St. Peter's Station, for many the modern gateway to the city.
