Saint George's Court

The Sint-Jorishof, in Ghent, was in the Middle Ages the guild house of the Saint George Guild, a guild of crossbowmen. It is located opposite the city hall, and the plot extended to the Belfry during the Middle Ages. Here stood the first cloth hall. The guild purchased the property and established the current Gothic guild house between 1469 and 1477. In 1477, Maria of Burgundy stayed here. It withstood the following centuries relatively unscathed. In 1909, the building became the property of the City of Ghent. It was first restored in 1911-1912 under the direction of architect Hendrik Geirnaert. The statue of Saint George atop the gable was created during this restoration by Geo Verbanck. In 2000, the façade was restored again. The building forms a whole with the adjacent building, the 'Witte Moor' or 'Grote Moor'.
