Signal de Botrange is the highest point in Belgium (694 meters above TAW). TAW is the Second General Leveling, the reference height system used in Belgium. In the Netherlands, the NAP (Normal Amsterdam Level) is used as a reference height system. Heights shown in the TAW are 2.33 metres lower than those shown in the NAP.
In 1804, the French colonel Tranchot built the first wooden tower for surveying measurements, which was later replaced by the current structures.
