In Hockai, it can get annoyingly busy; in summer, it is very popular among hikers, and in winter, it is highly regarded by skiers and cross-country skiers due to its favorable location. You stay here in the heart of the High Fens, but it feels as if you are in a tundra. There are 4000 hectares of wet marshes, heath, and peat areas, interspersed with deciduous trees and coniferous forests. Winters are harsh and long, summers are cool, and it is an area full of fog and mist.
At the end of September, it can already freeze, and snow regularly falls until April. But it is definitely worth it, as it is a formidable ecosystem with mountain vegetation and a flora that is unique.
The fauna is also noteworthy, as the chance of encountering wild boars, foxes, deer, roe deer, stoats, and weasels is not imaginary. They are abundant, just like the Eurasian jay, grasshopper warbler, great grey shrike, cuckoo, tit, skylark, crested lapwing, falcon, and buzzard.
