In Hockai it can be annoyingly busy, in summer it is very popular with hikers and in winter it is very popular with skiers and cross-country skiers due to its convenient location. You are here in the heart of the High Fens, but it seems as if you are in a tundra. Here are 4000 hectares of moist swamps, heathland and peat bogs, with deciduous trees and coniferous forests in between. The winters are harsh and long, the summers are chilly and it is an area full of mist and fog.
It can already freeze at the end of September and snow falls regularly until April. But it is definitely worth it, because it is a formidable ecosystem with mountain vegetation and a flora that is unique.
The fauna is also impressive because the chance that you will find wild boars, foxes, deer, roe deer, stoats and weasels is not imaginary. Just like jay, warbler, grey shrike, cuckoo, titmouse, lark, crested lapwing, falcon and buzzard, they are abundant.
