Jean-Pierre Clemençon, a French artist, lived in the house on the corner with Pluimstraat. To beautify his corner house a bit, he conceived a work of art called "The Knitting Girl." The man himself has long since moved on to sunnier places, but fortunately for us, he left his 'knitting girl' behind. Opposite the girl is a collection of objects on display: a piece of a Roman column, a car wheel, and a tin can, with a small barred window above them. The entirety of these things is meant to represent life. The knitting girl herself represents the present or everyday life, the objects beside her symbolize dead or dying civilizations or the past, and the window is a representation of the inner life of humans or the future.
