The Osseghem Park was designed by landscape architect Jules Buyssens for the 1935 World Expo. The pond located in the center of the park was to be crossed by a footbridge, created for this occasion.
The primary structure of this piece of art is a 40 cm thick and 4 m wide reinforced concrete shell with an arch profile. This arched shape allows the footbridge to reach the necessary 35 m to cross the pond while maintaining great lightness. The deck slab rests on this vault through two rows of square section posts. These complete this structure that is entirely made of reinforced concrete. The loads from the deck are thus transmitted to the shell via the posts and then transferred to the abutments by compression of the vault.
