Saint Clement

Eppegem has not been immune from setbacks in the past. In 1592 the church and many houses were set on fire by robbers and heretics. In 1628 the plague broke out and in the heavy battles in August and September 1914 the church, the town hall, the school and 176 houses were badly damaged, while many civilians were killed or taken away.

Rebuilt in 1910 in neo-Gothic style by architect Jules Bilmeyer and rebuilt after the destruction caused by the battle in 1914 under architect Edouard Bilmeyer. The oldest part of the church is the Romanesque tower (13th century).

To the left of the church in the Jagers-te-Voetlaan is also the Oude Pastorie with surrounding garden, protected building and landscape.

A little further towards Mechelen is the military cemetery to the left of the Mechelsesteenweg.
This cemetery has an area of 22 ares on which 228 Belgian graves from the First World War lie. Of the 228 graves, 46 are unidentified. The soldiers who lie here died during the Raid of Antwerp from 24 to 26 August 1914.
