The Sint-Alexiusbegijnhof in Dendermonde has 61 houses built around a trapezoidal courtyard. It has existed on this site since 1288. The original chapel was destroyed in 1914 and replaced with one that is less straightforward. The beggars set fire to the beguinage in 1579; Most of the current houses date from the early 17th century. Every year at the end of August the Beguinage festivals are held here. Originally, these festivals were organized to raise money for the restoration of the beguinage.
