The church of Opoeteren was a rather late foundation of the Counts of Loon, probably from the 12th century. In 1274 a Gothic choir was added to the existing church. The current nave probably dates from the 15th century. In 1522 aisles were added to the nave; In 1571, the tower was rebuilt and the north chapel added, both in late Gothic style. In 1905-06, under pastor D. Verdurmen, the church was demolished and rebuilt in neo-Gothic style by V. Lenertz (Leuven) and H. Martens (Stevoort), the tower was raised by six meters.
