The Floreffe Abbey was founded in 1121 by Norbert of Gennep (founder of the Order of Prémontré at the request of the Counts of Namur). Floreffe occupies an important strategic position in the defense of Namur against its powerful neighbors. Succession wars pit the counts of Hainaut against those of Namur and Floreffe suffered many plundering during the passage of armies, particularly during the 13th and 14th centuries. Durable peace would not return until the 18th century, and the abbots who managed the abbey took advantage of this to rebuild most of the buildings that compose it today.
