In the 1970s, houses and factories were demolished across dozens of metres in width and a length of half a kilometre in order to build the metro. Molenbeek recovered very slowly and remained an ‘open wound’ for decades. It was not until the beginning of this century that the demolition was completely erased with beautiful parks, apartments and government buildings.
