On a scorching summer day, July 23, 1453, the once again rebellious Ghent citizens were overwhelmingly defeated by the army of the Burgundian Duke Philip the Good. Since the capitulation was signed in the ducal army camp at Gavere, this event was named the Battle of Gavere, although the actual battlefield was largely located on the levees and in the Scheldt meadows of Semmerzake. In 1953, five centuries after this battle, the memory of this tragic military event was expressed in stone by the Ghent sculptor Frans Tinel. The Gaverse vernacular soon gave this Ghent warrior the name "Valeir van de Moart".
