That the church of Bottelare is proportionally large for this small community is certainly not coincidental. In the 16th century, the miraculous statue of Saint Anne was already very popular for pilgrimages, but this was further strengthened by a miraculous healing. The steady increase in worshippers led Jacobus Boonen, Archbishop of Mechelen, to establish the arch-brotherhood of Jesus, Mary, and Anne in the church of Bottelare in 1626. The growing number of pilgrims visiting Bottelare steadily increased and they could no longer enter the church. Therefore, a larger version of the parish church was built between 1641 and 1663. It replaced the earlier St. Martin's parish church.
