Forest of Anlier

The 5500 ha forest of Anlier is one of the most important in Belgium and extends southwest of Martelange. In the only large clearing there are four villages: Anlier, Vlessart, Behême and Louftémont. This forest is a remnant of the huge beech forest that once covered the Ardennes and in which oak, hornbeam and, on the southern valley slopes, the characteristic pepper tree also occurred. The main tree species that you will find there today are: sweet chestnut, sycamore, hornbeam, oak, beech, birch, maple, elm, Indian chestnut, Norway spruce, Scots pine, Japanese larch, false acacia, poplar, walnut, wood cress, lime and willow. And also a wealth of shrub species, including hazel, holly, white hawthorn, rowan and dogwood.
