Bruges 'die Scone' preserved the structure and appearance of the old city. Especially the second city wall determined the current cityscape.
Of the nine gates, four have been preserved: Smedenpoort, Kruispoort, Gentpoort, and Ezelpoort. The Katelijnepoort was located on the road to Kortrijk. The Katelijnepoort is the starting point of the well-known GR hiking route (GR 129).
The starting point is indicated by a GR hiking tree at the Katelijnepoort. This location also marks the connection of the walking path to the well-known GR 5A, 'Walking Circuit of Flanders', which creates a large loop around the provinces of West and East Flanders over a distance of approximately 560 km between Antwerp and De Panne. In the direction of Antwerp, this white-red signposted route runs along Katelijnestraat and then straight along Gentpoortvest. In the direction of De Panne, the GR 5A follows Katelijnevest westward along Minnewater and comes very close to the Bruges train station.
