The Cloth Hall of Ypres is one of Europe's largest civic buildings in Gothic style. The original cloth hall was built between 1230 and 1304 and was one of the earliest large buildings north of the Alps. The belfry is 70 m tall and was built between 1200 and 1230 as a symbol of the power of the bourgeoisie.
