Beschrijving

Parish church of Saint Audomarus At the intersection of Dorpstraat and Stationsstraat, near the Meester G. Vlaeminckplein located house of worship with surrounding cemetery, bordered on the Stationsstraat by a wall with a gate, on the north side by the Heldenweg leading to the Belgian Military Cemetery (World War I). Neogothic hall church designed by architect P. Buyck (Bruges) from 1855 with partially Romanesque (circa 1100), partially Gothic tower (originally crossing-) and transept. The latter remained spared when French troops burned down the church in 1793; they were integrated into the new building. Baptismal chapel (1954) and boiler room (1974) designed by architect B. Hendryckx (De Panne). Restoration of the tower led by architect W. Ingelaere (Poperinge) in 1970. Anchored yellow brick construction; presence of iron sandstone in the transept. Slate roofing. The floor plan unfolds a pre-placed west tower with adjoining aisles, a three-nave ship of five bays with straight closing of side chapels and a main choir of a straight bay with three-sided closing. Adjoining sacristy and boiler room respectively in the south and north bay of the latter. Square west tower of two uneven sections under a tent roof. West facade reinforced by means of buttresses. Tudor arch-shaped entrance, recessed in wide, profiled pointed arch. Round arch window (bricked up in the west facade) and traces of the start of a gable roof in the west and north facade, clearly indicating an earlier position at the crossing. Profiled pointed arch bell openings on the corner, with a continuous drip list and leak threshold, at the height of the second (younger) section. Marked parapet with wrought iron gate. Adjoining north aisle under a curved, broken gable roof. West facade with a blind, profiled pointed arch window on the corner. Traces of the construction joint left of the left side. Attached XX baptismal chapel under a gable roof (parallel to the ship) with a west gable facade featuring a pronounced roof ridge, wall weaving, top and shoulder pieces, and two pointed arch windows on the corner. Similar window in the north facade. North facade of the transept marked by buttresses with intersections. Profiled pointed arch window on the corner. Traces of the construction joint right, bricked up arched doorway under the latter. Adjoining south transept under the same roof. West facade supported by a south buttress with intersections and rhythmically marked by profiled pointed arches on half columns with capitals. Wooden Calvary under a canopy against the arch field. Slate gravestones (XIX) to the left and right of the latter. South facade marked by buttresses with intersections. Remnants of profiled framing right of arched window on the corner. Traces of the construction joint left, bricked up pointed doorway under the latter. Bays of ship and choir marked by pilasters and accentuated by pointed arch windows (three lights) with corner and drip list. Blind east facade of three-sided main choir closure with year stone 1856. Flat tower ceiling consisting of wooden child beams. Simple, plastered and white painted interior. Pointed barrel vaults, also plastered and painted. Pointed arch transverse arches resting on rectangular pillars. Furniture: Louis XIV side altars, wood, 1702, from the Capuchin monastery of Veurne, in north and south choir. Choir stalls, oak, early XVIII, in main choir. Neo-Gothic pulpit, wood, 1862 according to the inscription, in the ship.
