The striking globe water tower of Bierbeek, also known as the water tower on Bovenheide, made headlines in July 2011 when a dead pigeon fell into the water. As a result, the drinking water was not potable for numerous municipalities supplied by this water tower. The spherical water tower has a capacity of 500 m³ and is 29 meters high, not counting the numerous antennas on the dome... It serves not only Bierbeek but also the Pellenberg clinic, part of Kessel-Lo (Trolieberg), Lubbeek (high network), Blanden, Haasrode, and Lovenjoel.
