Saint John's Church, Romanesque church (11th century) in Tournai limestone, dedicated to John the Baptist with beautiful wood carvings: the altarpiece of Saint John (circa 1520) - late Gothic with Renaissance features. Hemelveerdegem is a peaceful Flemish village with a beautiful village square reminiscent of Mediterranean village squares... Hemelveerdegem comes from the Germanic Irminafripinga-haim = 'dwelling of the people of Irminafrip' (Irmina = great + fripa = peace). Probably there was an early Germanic settlement (agriculture) established in the 6th to 10th century!
