Originally, this castle was the marketplace and the town hall of the lordship of Ooigem. Ooigem was a free lordship from its inception (9th century) until 1510, which means that the lord of Ooigem was not subject to the count's authority.
In the town hall, justice was administered, which is why there is also a pillory (the pelderijn) on the estate. The building housed prisons, a courtroom (the marketplace), storages for payments in kind, and ship halls.
At the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th century, the lordship was in decline, and in 1510 it was sold to the Burgundian lords, the family de Gros-de Lens. It was Jean de Gros who had the marketplace converted into a manor house in 1559. Throughout the centuries, it was often remodeled, for example, by the family de Lens in the 17th century. The castle was mostly used as a summer residence.
