At this location once lay the village center of Stuivekenskerke. In 1870, the village center was relocated to the vicinity of the Viconiahoeve, about two kilometers from here. Only the church tower remained standing. During World War I, it was reinforced by the Belgians and served as a lookout post. Gradually, this post - called the "Grand Garde Sud" - was strengthened so that an entire infantry company could be stationed there. At the initiative of Father Martial Lekeu, who himself had been "on the lookout" here for two years, a memorial chapel was established in 1925. This protected war site still houses an original boundary marker with original inscriptions.
