Did you know that in September 1914 all men aged 16 and older were locked up by the German army in the church of Bavegem and had to spend the night there? This is stated in the report of the then pastor of Bavegem:
"... Daily processions were stopped on 7th September 1914, on the day on which the German army arrived in Baevegem with 300 men. It was also on the night of September 7 to 8 that all the men of 16 years of age were shut up in the church with the spiritual and secular authorities; but it is needless to add that when this order was circulated in the parish, the greater part fled to the neighboring congregations, so that only about a hundred spent the night in the church. The prisoners were released the next day in the morning and were allowed to return home unharmed."
