We step away from the city wall and head towards the Muur. It is a pilgrimage site for cycling enthusiasts. At the top of the Oudenberg stands the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwkapel, a place where popular devotion finds its home. “Already in Celtic times this must have been a magical place,” says guide Luc. The fact that it has since become a famous Marian site is partly thanks to the Van Crombrugghe family. “It was Ghislain Van Crombrugghe who bought the chapel and saved it from demolition by the French revolutionaries.”
