The Wijnendalebos was part of a large forest area in medieval Flanders that extended from Ypres to Wijnendale and from Roeselare to Diksmuide. This forest might have had an extent of 4000 ha. What remains of the original Houthulst Forest is now the Wijnendalebos, about 280 ha near Ichtegem and Torhout, and another 352 ha called Vrijbos in the territory of Houthulst. The Wijnendalebos is mostly located in the territory of Ichtegem and partly in that of Torhout. In the northeast, it is separated from the 'Keunebos' by a strip of agricultural land. The Keunebos adjoins the walled park of Wijnendale Castle. The forest area is protected under European law as part of the Natura 2000 area 'Forests, heaths, and valley areas of Sandy Flanders: western section'.
