The picturesque beguinage has likely existed since the 13th century and is one of the three beguinages in West Flanders alongside Bruges and Kortrijk. In 1914, the beguinage also perished in the horrors of war, and the beguines disappeared forever from the cityscape of Diksmuide. Nevertheless, the beguinage was rebuilt in its original style. Since 1990, there have been adult individuals with a mental disability living there. During weekdays, they offer fun gifts for sale in the small shop "the house of Miss Sybille."
