The Kijk-uit is one of the most remarkable protected buildings in the center of Vilvoorde. Currently, the restaurant De Kijk-Uit is located there. This house presumably dates back to the 15th or 16th century. The building is characterized by a predominant Spanish style. What the actual purpose of the Kijk-uit was remains a mystery. Some sources claim that it was for a long time owned by the fullers' guild, who operated a fulling mill there. Others believe that the building served as a watchtower after the disappearance of the castle of Vilvoorde. After all, it was located at a fairly strategic point. Still, others think that the Kijk-uit was originally the chapel of the castle of Vilvoorde or the chapel of the nearby Dominican monastery.
