The Dendermonde-Gent railway line (since 1837) and the station of Schoonaarde were important for passenger and freight transport, also for the municipality of Berlare across the Scheldt. The station building (1880), in a typical style of brick and natural stone, is protected along with the outbuildings and the cobbled station square.
