The Brouckère Square

The Brouckèreplein is a square in the heart of Brussels named after Charles de Brouckère, the mayor of Brussels from 1848 to 1860. The square is the junction of the two central roads that were created by the covering of the Zenne. The Brouckèreplein is the replacement of the Augustijn church that was demolished in 1893. The facade of this church was dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt in Ixelles, where it is now known as the Trinity Church. The square is surrounded by buildings from the fin de siècle, but since the 1970s, there are also modern buildings among them. The square is one of the most important nightlife centers in the city due to the theaters, restaurants, hotels, and a large cinema. The Brouckèreplein is sometimes referred to as the Brussels Times Square, mainly because of the large LED screen atop the Hotel Continental. That screen was installed after a fire on October 14, 1901. The impressive sculpture group Le Festin completely melted away in the flames. The reconstruction lasted until 1910, and it was decided to flatten the roof and not to restore the sculpture group. In the 1950s, a large light screen was installed on the roof, which was replaced by the LED screen in 2011.
