Doornzele is a unique three-settlement in Flanders. The village is built around the expansive Doornzele Dries.
A dries is an old form of settlement, usually dating from the Middle Ages. In a dries, the houses are located around a central square. In some regions, the central square has a more elongated shape. This central square served in the Middle Ages as a communal meadow for livestock and as a place where planting was allowed, so no buildings could be erected there. There is often a drinking pond located near a dries as well.
