The following figures from 1906 show that the Free State of Moresnet was an ideal place to start your smuggling business. Pure ethyl alcohol costs only 1.20 francs per liter in Moresnet, while tavern owners and retailers in Belgium pay between 4 and 6 francs. Philip Dröge describes in his beautiful book "Moresnet" that bicycles were used with a waterproof frame in which a few liters of alcohol could be smuggled. A resident of Kelmis rode his bike to work every day across the border, greeting the border guards each time. He was arrested after he fell at the border and a stream of alcohol shot out from his bike.
