Fort Impérial was built in 1812 by the French to defend the port of Ostend against English invasions. Via the Spinoladijk - named after Ambrogio Spinola (1569 - 1630), a general from Genoa who captured Ostend during the Siege of Ostend in 1604 - you arrive at the Twins. This stone slope was built in 1903 to prevent the dunes from being pushed further back by the tidal flow. The fort was given the name "Fort Napoleon" in 1840.
During WWI, four heavy cannons were stationed between the fort and the harbor entrance (battery Hindenburg). During WWII, the German naval corps was housed there. One meter of concrete was poured on the roof to make the building bomb-proof, and a machine gun nest was installed on the roof.
After WWII, it fell into disrepair and was restored in 2000.
