Since 1976, this museum has housed the cabinet and archive of Maurice Maeterlinck; this was an achievement of the Maurice Maeterlinck Foundation, which was established in 1954 under the impetus of Professor Robert Van Nuffel to keep alive the memory of the Ghent writer and his Ghent artist friends: the graphic artists Charles Doudelet (1861-1979) and Victor Stuyvaert (1897-1974), both of whom illustrated the work of their fellow townsman.
