The Liermolen is one of the five watermills on the Maalbeek in the Flemish Brabant municipality of Grimbergen. The buildings of this flour mill date partly from the 17th century and were rebuilt in 1759 and 1762. The Lier Mill is the former abbey mill of Grimbergen Abbey and is built in whitewashed brick and sandstone. It was inhabited until the end of 1971. In 1962, the allotment company Matexi bought the mill with the permission of the city council. From then on, this cultural heritage was seriously threatened for a while because Matexi wanted to raze the mill to the ground, but the municipality bought the mill in 1972 during the administration of Jozef Mensalt. In 1977 a thorough restoration took place that determines the current appearance. Since 1980, the mill has housed the milling department of the Museum of Older Techniques. The ready-to-use watermill has an intact interior and is kept running for grinding demonstrations.
