Where the town hall stands now, there used to be the castle of the lordship of Terheide dating back to the 15th century. This estate was purchased by the affluent baron Jozef de Man d'Hobruge (mayor of Hoeilaart from 1823 to 1846 and from 1848 to 1854). Because he had bought many church lands (which were declared forfeited during the French Revolution), he felt that he was not right with himself: he felt remorse and went to Rome to make a donation to Pope Leo XII. On that occasion, he received from the pope the mortal remains of Saint Marcellina, relics that are now kept in the town hall.
