Wim Delvoye (Belgium, 1965)
Location: Driehoeksplein, Het Zoute
About the artist
This conceptual artist started in the mid-80s with paintings on wallpaper and carpets. Since then, he has used a wide range of materials with a surprising and preferably shocking result. With his painted gas cylinders, tattooed pigs, sand bottles, feces-producing machines, and erotic retorts in a chapel, he confronts kitsch and absolute bad taste with what art should do for him: “communicate, create images that burn into everyone’s retina.” This has made him internationally renowned.
About the sculpture
The “pissing angel” in patinated polyester, denounced as blasphemy yet cherished by locals and tourists, is actually meant to be a wind rose and fountain. Again, a confrontation between religious kitsch and folk vulgarity. “The more people speak ill of my angel, the better. At least they look at it. People find it dirty, while excretion is actually hygienic; I cannot stand dirt.”
