The parish church of St. Bavo is located within a walled cemetery. The oldest mention of the church dates back to 864 as the property of the Ghent St. Bavo's Abbey. The choir is largely built of Balegem sandstone, which comes from the nearby village. A Corinthian capital in the church comes from the Roman site of Velzeke. It now serves as a pedestal for a modern altar.
