The impressive Sint-Romboutstoren towers high above the city, but even inside the cathedral, animals tell their own story. We pause at the monumental pulpit, made by Michiel Vervoort. “It comes from the church of the Norbertines in the Bruul, but ended up here after the abolition of the order. The group of figures under the pulpit depicts Norbertus being thrown from his horse and converting. The Earthly Paradise is illustrated with various animals. Be sure to also notice the pelican. In the past, it was thought that a pelican hurt itself to feed its young with its blood. Thus, the animal was often associated with Christ.”
