It was in this place that was the residence of the noble house of Elderen, of which the best known are Canon William of Elderen, president of the council of the Prince-Bishop of Liège in the sixteenth century, and his nephew John Louis of Elderen, prince-bishop in the seventeenth century.
Lord Godenoel would have built the first castle in the thirteenth century and would have given its name as a prefix to the village of Genoelselderen. Elderen's family remained there until 1718; then the domain passed to the van Oyenbrugghe and those of Borchgrave. The French revolutionaries destroyed it in the late eighteenth century; only the cellars were preserved. In 1859, an Earl of Borchgrave built the current castle in neoclassical style. In the private park behind it, there is a Gallo-Roman mound from the i century. Next to it is the castral farmhouse in the oldest Mosan Renaissance style in the castle.
