The tall, narrow windows have a visible iron lintel (the Art Nouveau movement did not shy away from visibly using new materials). Many decorative elements have disappeared from the lantern-shaped bay windows, adorned with lance and Art Nouveau curls. The playful cornices were originally beautifully decorated and painted. The house name is adorned with holly. These stunning mosaics are presumably the work of artist-decorator H. Verbuecken. The facades of the house "De Winter" have been restored to their original condition. The interior has also been expertly restored. Besides the beautiful painting and stucco work in the rooms and hallway, it is mainly the murals in the "Moorish room" that provide a pleasant surprise. We mention in passing that General Van Merlen and General Capiaumont were military commanders involved in the Battle of Waterloo (1815). The houses in this beautiful part of Generaal Van Merlenstraat were inhabited by many dignitaries around the turn of the century.
