Nieuwpoort itself actually consists of two parts, Nieuwpoort-City and Nieuwpoort-Beach.
Here, the river IJzer flows into the North Sea via the Ganzepoot.
The current town hall was built in 1922 on the Market Square. The building is constructed in Flemish Renaissance style. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Church was rebuilt in the 1920s after World War I. The nearly free-standing tower was only completed in 1952.
In the Fish Market, you can join a guided tour weekly (between June 15 and September 15) that departs at 9:30 AM from the Tourism Office.
You can also visit the City Hall with belfry. The 35m high belfry (on the UNESCO World Heritage list) is designed as a partial extension of the facade.
The King Albert I monument is built of brick and keeps the memory of all the victims of World War I alive. In the center stands an equestrian statue of the king.
