The river rises in the town of Honsfeld in the municipality of B³llingen, at 640m above sea level. The basin is located in the High Ardennes. At 674 metres ÚÚú, Baraque Michel is one of the highest points in Belgium and forms part of the watershed of the AmblÞve basin. The mouth of the AmblÞve near Comblain-au-Pont, on the other hand, is only 120 metres away. The AmblÞve therefore has a very high suspension.
The valley of the AmblÞve is especially narrow. Near Fond de Quareux the valley is the narrowest, while the valley near the village of Cheneux is relatively wide. The valley is one of the most beautiful areas in the High Ardennes.
