At the Sint-Janskerk, now the Sint-Baafskathedraal, a murder driven by love took place.
It all began with a fierce quarrel between two patrician families, the Rijm family and the Alijn family. A son of the Rijm family was in love with a very beautiful girl but learned that there was a suitor in the picture, a descendant of the Alijn family. So he went to the Sint-Janskerk and cowardly killed his rival, his brother, and also the servant. As was customary at the time, the Rijms were declared outlaws for this and their homes were razed to the ground. After several years, they received mercy from the count on the condition that they established a place of worship for eighteen elderly and needy women. Thus, the Alijn almshouse was created on the Kraanlei, which was dedicated to Saint Catherine.
