Between 1460 and 1462, the Meat and Cloth Hall, dating from 1293, was demolished on the Grote Markt and replaced by a new meat hall in Gothic style. Master builder Jan Geuteghem delivered an elegant building, the floors and attics of which could be reached via a stair tower. Until 1862, the butchers' benches stood on the ground floor. The spacious room on the first floor served as a money room for the Guild of Saint George until 1715. Since 1481, the room on the second floor has been rented out to the chamber of rhetoric de Leeuwerkenaars. Between 1898 and 1990, several restoration works were carried out, including the installation of central heating, lighting and security, for the redevelopment of the building as a historical museum.
