Imposing late classical construction, originally built as a country house or alderman's house of the Craft Assenede in 1771. The oldest known alderman's house, located southwest of the church, was erected in 1502 and would replace the 14th-century "schoutheethuus". Because of the dilapidated condition, het Ambacht bought two houses on the south side of the Markt in 1723. These were converted into the current building in 1771, according to an archive document of 1773 designed by architect Jan Baptist Simoens (Ghent). Unsigned or dated building plans, preserved in the State Archives in Ghent, show that the core of the houses was preserved. The still existing vaulted cellar probably also dates from a previous construction phase. Restoration in 1942-43 by architect Amandus Robert Janssens (see memorial stone in the corridor) and extension at the back with a transverse wing in modified style. New administrative rear building on the Stadhuisstraat from the 1950s.
