Domain Roosendael

Domain Roosendael is almost 800 years old. It owes its name to the Cistercian abbey that was founded here, by the Nete, around 1221. From that medieval establishment, hardly anything remains above ground today, apart from a few wall remnants. The religious wars did not pass this region by. The abbey was plundered several times in the 16th century and was ultimately completely demolished under Calvinist rule. The rebuilding only started in 1648. Today, one can hardly imagine that by the end of the 17th century an impressive abbey complex rose here, complete with a beautiful baroque church.
The Gatehouse dates from 1777. It was constructed in connection with the 25th anniversary of Abbess Agnes Haegens. The same abbess also built the Coach House in 1781.
In 1797, under French rule, the religious were permanently expelled. The abbey was sold and largely demolished to sell the building materials. Apart from the buildings already mentioned, a part of the abbess's quarters still remained standing.

In the child- and animal-friendly cycling café 'De Schuur' - with a green and spacious terrace - you can find a snack and a drink at a democratic price.
